MACHI KAZUKO / Suzuki Emi is an onna yaku of Baragumi, a very skilled dancer best known for her high jumps and good balances. She is 29 years old and has mostly given up any dream of becoming top star at this point. She is the ex of former otoko yaku, AINO SARA and the best friend of Yurigumi top star, INABA OTOWA.

Only child of the new money, but otherwise pretty regular Suzuki family, she has grown up with supportive and encouraging parents who first nourished her dream of becoming a ballerina, but when she fell in love with the Yamashita Revue, they seamlessly redirected their focus and aimed to help her get through the entrance exam to the Yamashita School which she passed in her second try (2011-2013). Extremely talented dancer who is often used for flashy or emotionally evocative numbers. Was in a relationship with fellow Baragumi actress, AINO SARA, when she was younger (2015-2017) but they split on friendly terms and she would continue to stand by Sara as her friend, even as she moved on to become the lover of Yurigumi otoko yaku, INABA OTOWA, and later had to leave the Revue entirely to get married in order to please her family. Has had a few passing relationships to girls outside the Revue, but otherwise had her eyes on her work and career. Her parents know about her sexual preferences and accept it, although they also worry about her future, her 30th birthday coming up soon.
THE YAMASHITA REVUE.
All-female theatre owned and directed by the Yamashita family in Tokyo since the 1950’s. Currently, the oldest son of the family, Yamashita Kei, is head of the theatre board that sees to the administration of the Revue.
The theatre consists of two troupes, Baragumi and Yurigumi, one focused on honing the skill of dancing (Baragumi) and the other on honing the skill of singing (Yurigumi). Yurigumi is especially famous for its full-length plays and musicals, while Baragumi is famed for its elaborate and sparkling revue dance shows. Each troupe has about 50 members, led by the top combi, one otoko yaku (male role actress) and one onna yaku (female role actress), promoted by the board.
To further promote the “couple” image of the top combi, each pair lives together in an assigned apartment with two separate bedrooms, but sharing all other facilities and living together for as long as they’re working as a combi. This is seen as a condition for rising in rank and cannot be arranged any other way. Once they retire from the Revue, they move out of the apartment, whether together or apart.
Daily leadership happens in combination with Yamashita Kei and each troupe’s kumichou (troupe leader), who is the most senior actress of the group, the show’s artistic director and the lead choreographer, both of the latter depending on show.
